Youth Symposium: The Intersection of Research, Civil Society, and Young People in East Asia

Submission Guideline
1. General Requirements
- The 2025 Youth Symposium: The Intersection of Research, Civil Society, and Young People in East Asia (hereafter Symposium) is organized by East Asia Young Scholars Association (EAYSA).
- Students and young scholars of all academic backgrounds and civil society actors are encouraged to submit their works featuring original research, expert reports, and/or insightful experience in Youth and Contemporary East Asia issues.
- Those submitting their works should complete the Submission Form. Submissions by email will not be considered. Submission Form is now open.
- Multimedia submissions will not be considered in place of an abstract.
- All works must be submitted in .doc or .docx format. Submissions in other formats will be returned.
- Submissions will be unique to each work and panel. Please check the information provided in Section II of this page.
- References may be submitted in any style or format, as long as it is consistent throughout the manuscript. References will not be included in the word count.
- Priorities will be given to young scholars (including undergraduate and graduate students) and civil society actors and whose work(s) are significant to East Asia and are able to share their works in-person.
- By submitting your works to this Symposium, you have agreed to our terms, conditions, and privacy policies. Applicants must also be aware that accepted works may be digitally published by the Organizers.
- Given that this event will be held in a hybrid format, accepted applicants may choose whether to join the Symposium in person or online. However, we strongly encourage participants to join us in person.
- You must submit your work by the designated deadline. The submission deadline can be checked on the Submit Your Work page. You are strongly encouraged to submit your work in advance.
2. Specific Requirements for Different Works and Panels
The Symposium is open to three types of submissions: Individual Submissions (Abstract), Individual Submissions (Essay), and Panel Proposal.
Individual Submissions (Abstract)
- This type of submission is applicable to all regular panels, which include but not limited to the following themes:
- Liberal Values and Democratic Development in East Asia
- Economic Interdependence and International Relationship
- East Asian Liberal arts
- East Asian Philosophy
- Climate Change and Sustainability
- Language, Culture, Thoughts, and History
- Minority Rights
- The Future of East Asia
- This type of submission is open to submissions written in English and Japanese.
- Submissions in English should not exceed 400 words.
日本語で書く場合は、800字を超えないようにしてください。 - Submission of this type is further classified into two categories: Research Works and Civil Society Perspectives.
- For Research Works, it is generally recommended that the content includes an introduction, summary of methodology and findings, as well as a conclusion. If the nature of your research does not align with this format, be sure to emphasize the main objectives and relevant components of your research.
- For Civil Society Perspectives (including reports), it is generally recommended that the content includes the purpose of the report, study, or analysis, a clear background of the issue(s), key findings, and recommendations.
- Submissions to both tracks shall demonstrate clear originality.
- Each author may submit a maximum of three abstracts. (For example, if Author A is the first author of Abstract 1 and the second author of Abstract 2, both will count toward their total of three submissions.)
Individual Submissions (Essay)
- This type of submission is only applicable to the panel “Contemporary East Asia”.
- Submissions to this panel should be written in English and should be around 1600 words (inclusive of tables and figures; exclusive of abstract, keywords, references, and biography). Submission should follow the guidelines of Anchor, which can be checked here.
- This panel is open to submissions including but not limited to summary of reports, original research articles, book and research reviews, and theoretical discussions.
- Submission should utilize the provided word limit to present its research question, methodology, findings, limitations, and conclusions clearly. All tables and figures should be provided with high resolution. References must be provided in an academic manner.
- Submissions accepted to this panel will be published in Anchor after the author(s) presented at the Symposium. The publication opportunity is exclusive to works submitted to this panel.
- Please note that in addition to the review conducted by the Programing Committee of the Symposium, EAYSA will also conduct editorial checks before publishing the essay in Anchor. Authors will be asked to revise their essays before or after the Symposium for publication when EAYSA found necessary. Authors who decline to revise their essays will not be eligible for presentation at the Symposium or publication in Anchor.
Panel Proposal
- A Panel Proposal should consist of 3-5 speakers. Each speaker should present one work at the panel.
- The Proposal should be submitted by the Panel Chair, who will be considered as the representative of the proposal and the proposed panel. The Chair may or may not be a speaker at the panel. However, the Chair must be present throughout the panel to moderate the session if the proposal is accepted.
- The presentations included in the proposal should be surrounding a common theme. When submitting the proposal, please include the title and description of the panel at the beginning of the document.
- Following the title and description of the panel, submission should list out the names of the Chair and the speakers.
- The maximum length of the panel is 1 hour and 45 minutes.
- Panel Proposals are open to submissions in English, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.
— - The title of the panel should not exceed 20 words.

— - The length of the description of the panel should not exceed 300 words.

以中文(繁體或簡體)書寫時,小組摘要不應超過400字。
— - The length of the abstract of each speaker’s presentation should not exceed 400 words.
日本語で書く場合は、要旨一つが800字を超えないようにしてください。
요지를 한국어로 작성하실 경우, 하나당 800자 이내로 작성해 주십시오.
以中文(繁體或簡體)書寫時,每一位發表者的內容概要不應超過600字。
— - Proposal should either be fully written in English, Japanese, Korean, or Chinese. The language of presentation should be consistent throughout the panel.
*If any changes are made on the aforementioned information, updates will be either provided on the Symposium’s webpage or in the finalized symposium program.
3. Terms and Conditions
By submitting to the 2025 Youth Symposium: The Intersection of Research, Civil Society, and Young People in East Asia, the applicant agrees to all of the following terms and conditions:
The applicant agrees that they are submitting their own original work. Plagiarism of any kind is not tolerated. If the applicant submits an abstract on behalf of an organization or cohort of authors, the applicant agrees that they have received the consent of any and all previous co-authors to submit and represent their work.
The applicant also agrees to materially confine their presentation to the contents provided by their abstract if selected to present. If the applicant wishes to remove their abstract from consideration, they must do so, in writing, no less than a month prior to the symposium dates.
The applicant understands that the contact information provided is their own and consents to be contacted by 2025 Youth Symposium Programming Committee about the status of their submission and presentation.
The applicant permits the Organizers to digitally publish submitted work in official event proceedings for the symposium and/or for Anchor. In the event proceedings, the Organizers will publish submissions in full as provided by the author(s). In Anchor, submitted work will go through editorial checks before publication and may be subject to revision. The Organizers are not responsible for spelling and language errors in the submitted documents. The author(s) of the submissions agree that they are the sole owners of, or have all necessary rights to submit the abstract for publication by the Organizers of 2025 Youth Symposium, and that publication of the abstract does not infringe any intellectual property rights of any third parties.
